UGC National Eligibility Test or UGC-NET in short is an eligibility test to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for ‘award of Junior Research Fellowship and appointment as Assistant Professor’, ‘appointment as Assistant Professor and admission to Ph.D.’ and ‘admission to Ph.D. only’ in Indian universities and colleges. The Test is conducted in CBT mode. NTA or National Testing Agency has the mandate to conduct the UGC NET. The Examination is held twice in a year in December and June. UGC NET Notification 2025 Eligibility Criteria
The aspirants who desire to apply and appear must fulfill the eligibility criteria as laid down in the notification. So, have a look into the eligibility criteria before the submission of application.
Educational Qualification
- The UR / EWS candidates who have secured at least 55% marks in Master’s Degree or equivalent examination from universities/institutions recognized by UGC in Humanities and Social Science (including languages), Computer Science and Applications, Electronic Science etc. are eligible for this Test.
- The Other Backward Classes (OBC) belonging to Non-Creamy Layer/ Scheduled Caste (SC)/ Scheduled Tribe (ST)/ Persons with Disability (PwD)/ Third gender category candidates who have secured at least 50% marks can also apply for registration of UGC-NET December 2025.
- Candidates who are pursuing their Master’s degree and whose result is still awaited can also apply for UG NET. Such candidates will be admitted provisionally provided they complete their Master’s degree or equivalent examination within two years from the date of NET result with required percentage of marks, failing which they shall be treated as disqualified.
- However, those candidates who qualify for ‘Admission to Ph.D. Only’ must complete their Master’s degree or equivalent examination within one year from the date of NET result with required percentage of marks, failing which they shall be treated as disqualified.
Age Limit and Relaxation
- The candidates must be within the upper age limit of 30 Years as on the as on 01.12.2025.
- The Upper Age is relaxed by 5 Years for OBC-NCL, /PwD/Third gender categories and to women applicants.
- 03 (Three) years’ relaxation in age will be permissible to the candidates with L.L.M. degree.
